Are Charter Boats Safe in Bali? What Every Traveler Should Know

If you’re planning a private boat trip in Bali, chances are you’ve seen the dreamy photos: turquoise water, hidden bays, and not a traffic jam in sight. But before you hit “Book Now,” a fair and very important question pops up:

“Are charter boats in Bali actually safe?”
Short answer: Yes—if you choose the right operator.
Long answer? Let’s get into it.

What “Safe” Really Means at Sea

When we talk about safety on a boat, we’re talking about a few key things:

  • The condition and maintenance of the boat
  • The experience and qualifications of the crew
  • The availability of life-saving equipment (life jackets, radios, first aid, etc.)
  • And of course, how prepared the operator is for any situation

A boat trip should be relaxing, not nerve-wracking. And while Bali is one of the most beautiful places in the world to charter a yacht, not all charter companies operate to the same standard.

Here’s what you should look for—and what we at Bali Charter Boat make sure to deliver, every single trip.

✅ 1. Professional, Licensed Crew

The crew is everything.

Our captains and crew are licensed, trained, and know these waters like the back of their hand. Most are local sea legends who grew up navigating these islands long before there was GPS.

They’re trained in:

  • Emergency procedures
  • Weather and sea condition assessment
  • Basic first aid
  • How to smile and hand you a cold drink at the same time (an art form)

✅ 2. Well-Maintained, Sea-Worthy Boats

Our boats aren’t just polished to look pretty—they’re maintained to international safety standards. We inspect our vessels regularly. That includes:
  • Engine checks
  • Electrical system inspections
  • Safety gear audits
  • Cleanliness and hygiene reviews (yes, including the toilet)

If something isn’t right, we fix it before anyone steps on board.

✅ 3. All the Right Gear (and Then Some)

Every BCB charter includes:
  • Life jackets for all guests (even the little ones)
  • Fire extinguishers and emergency signaling devices
  •  First aid kits
  • Emergency communications (marine radio + mobile backup)
  • Shaded areas to prevent heat exhaustion (because Bali sun is no joke)
We also limit passenger numbers for comfort and safety. We won’t overload a boat—ever., so please don’t ask.

⚠️A Word of Caution: Not All Charters Are Equal

You’ll find plenty of “too good to be true” boat deals online. Cheap prices, vague details, no clear
company name.

Some of these may:

  • Operate without insurance
  • Overload their vessels
  • Skip maintenance to save costs
  • Use unlicensed crew

It’s not worth the risk. Always book through a trusted, transparent operator with good reviews, clear communication, and visible safety policies.

What About the Ocean Conditions?

Bali’s waters are known for itsw surf so there is swell, however there are protected areas that are calm especially around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. But as with any island destination, weather and sea conditions can change quickly, so the captain may advise to turn back or wait until bad weather passes.

That’s why we always:

  • Check forecasts in advance
  • Monitor real-time conditions on the day
  • Advise you on the best times to go (and when to reschedule if needed)

Most passengers want to go to Manta Point for Snorkeling but it should be noted that this area is close to cliffs that pose a risk if conditions are rough. If you suffer easily from sea sickness its not advised to include this as part of your itinerary. The captain can advise if the conditions on the day are suitable to visit Manta Point. It should also be noted that only motor boats can visit this area-not sail boats. Catamarans are not able to go there due to safety concerns, however they can anchor nearby and small boats can be used to shuttle you to the Manta’s

Who determines whether its safe to go ahead with the trip?

We take official guidance directly from the Bali Harbour Master. If he advises that sea conditions are unsafe—we do not go out. No exceptions.

And in that case? The first option is to reschedule the trip but if this is’nt possible, We’ll cancel the trip and refund your deposit, because your safety (and peace of mind) comes first.

No awkward fine print. No blaming the weather gods. Just responsible, respectful chartering—exactly how it should be. Please check our full terms and conditions here.

It should be noted that rain in and of itself does not classify as unsafe and although it may not be ideal if its raining, the trip is expected to go ahead and lots of fun can still be had!

Is It Safe for Families, Kids, and Older Guests?

Yes. Many of our guests are:

  • Families with young children
  • Honeymooners
  • Elderly parents on a once-in-a-lifetime trip

We tailor each trip to match your group’s needs—from calm snorkeling spots to shaded chill zones and smooth cruising routes.

Bonus Tip: Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend having travel insurance that covers boat trips, just for extra peace of mind. It’s always smart to cover all bases when you’re traveling internationally.
